Burgundy has proven that quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir can be grown in the same soil, Corton hill being the classic example. Wines from this special place inspired our decision to make Chardonnay from the Savoy Vineyard, whose soil and climate are also ideal for both Burgundian varietals. Following a warmer growing season, the 2019 Savoy Chardonnay was picked nearly two weeks earlier than the previous vintage, and true to form shines with the balance between citrus-focused Wente and ripe, fruit-driven Prosser clones.
The 2019 Savoy Chardonnay opens with deeply textured notes of yellow pear, fresh kumquat, and candied lemon rind. Rounding the mouthfeel are delicate touches of crème fraîche, honeycomb, and baked brioche, while a vibrant yuzu acid note weaves and lifts throughout. Simultaneously supple and crisp, the 2019 Savoy Chardonnay displays an intriguing complexity of balance that gently persists long after the first sip. Savor at present, or delight in a depth that will continue to develop gracefully over time both in glass and in bottle.
“The 2019 Chardonnay Savoy is absolutely gorgeous. In this vintage, the balance seems more driven by brightness and acids than by the open-knit textures that are often found in this Anderson Valley site. Dried flowers, chamomile, mint and lemon peel linger.”
