2019 Heintz Chard

Located just a stone’s throw across Harrison Grade from the Estate, the Heintz Ranch is a pedigreed site with mature vines in the hills above Occidental. Planted on Goldridge sandy loam soil, the organically grown fruit is nurtured by moderately warm days and cool evenings, resulting in a richness balanced by lively acidity. Picked toward the third week in September–a time reminiscent of cooler vintages past–the 2019 Heintz at harvest showed good physiological ripeness at moderate sugars with pristine fruit. Barrel fermented with a modest amount of new wood, only 100 cases were produced of this luscious coastal Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes

With zesty acidity and a tender tropicality, the 2019 Heintz Chardonnay is a focused balance of sour and sweet. Bright aromas of lychee and Meyer lemon curd are complemented by fresh pineapple and ripe starfruit, with enticing notes of graham cracker, sweet plumeria, and lively white pepper weaving throughout. The complexity of the fragrant nose is confirmed on the palate, and a salivating salinity is further observed. The round, voluptuous entry yields to an exciting acid attack that carries through the mid-palate to the long, lingering finish.

“The 2019 Chardonnay Heintz is creamy, ample and enveloping, as wines off this site so often are. Apricot, lemon confit, marzipan and light tropical notes open in an oily, beautifully textured Chardonnay loaded with personality. The Heintz is a Chardonnay that demands attention. It certainly has mine.
