Located just a stone’s throw across Harrison Grade from the Estate, the Heintz Ranch is a pedigreed site with mature vines in the hills above Occidental. Planted on Goldridge sandy loam soil, the organically grown fruit is nurtured by moderately warm days and cool evenings, resulting in a richness balanced by lively acidity. Picked in mid-October, the long, cool growing season in 2023 brought full physiological maturity to the Heintz vineyard almost a month later than in recent years. Handpicked in the early morning, the cold clusters were carefully pressed whole, then fermented and aged in neutral and once-used French oak before settling for an additional two months in stainless steel prior to bottling. A combined result of the cooler season and thoughtful cellar decisions, the 2023 Heintz Chardonnay is a richly compelling snapshot of this special coastal site.
The 2023 Heintz Chardonnay opens with rich aromas of ripe Meyer lemon, white jasmine, and a whiff of fresh pineapple that adds a touch of tropicality. These textured aromatics are echoed on the palate and lifted by notes of crisp white currant and crushed river rock. Zesty acidity further enlivens the mouthfeel, while a tinge of vanilla adds an elegant roundness to the lingering, ageworthy finish.
“The 2023 Chardonnay Heintz is a steely, mineral-driven wine from this property – unusually so. Slate, crushed rocks, mint and sage all run through this finely cut, vibrant Chardonnay. . . a very fine and promising wine.”
