2025 Fall Release

Vineyard Profile

Board & Batten pays homage to the various barns originally constructed on the Estate in the 1890s, noted for their distinct exterior siding. In their assembly, each board and accompanying wooden strip – or batten – is an independent unit then joined together to form a strong structure. Comprised of fruit from our biodynamically farmed Estate, the Proprietary Red is crafted in similar cohesive fashion, as a stand-alone blend built from individual varietal expressions. Blended following fermentation, the 2022 Board & Batten enjoyed a generous 20-month élevage in neutral French oak barrels. With fewer than 100 cases produced, the concentrated 2022 vintage features an expressive Zinfandel core deftly complemented by a savory Syrah backbone, honoring the distinctive character of both cool-climate varietals.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Board & Batten Estate Proprietary Red leads with a rush of huckleberry, blackberry compote, and black currant cordial, highlighting its Zinfandel core of generous fruit and aromatic flair. Following the dynamic entry are warm hints of baking spices, savory pie crust, and a subtle leather undertone. Structured Syrah tannins and an earthy echo of forest floor add grounding contrast, balanced by a flicker of acidity that brightens the palate and draws out the lasting finish. Exhibiting both immediacy and endurance, the 2022 Board & Batten Estate Proprietary Red promises to evolve gracefully in bottle without diminishing its current charm.

Wine Reviews

“The 2022 Board & Batten Estate, Radio-Coteau’s Zinfandel/Syrah blend is gorgeous. Ripe, juicy and forward with tons of vibrant fruit, the 2022 will be impossible to resist in its youth. Succulent cherry, blood orange and pomegranate are all amplified in this racy, inviting red blend. Bright acids and floral top notes lend freshness to perk up the resonant, expressive finish. “
