Radio-Coteau 2017 Belay Pinot Noir Bottle

Vineyard Profile

Planted on a ridge top above the town of Occidental, Belay is our Estate Pinot Noir, farmed organically and transitioning to biodynamic. Our goal is to nurture the fruit from grape to glass, which increasingly becomes a reality with each Estate planting. As we become more vertically-integrated, we find winegrowing a monumental task akin to climbing a mountain, with the Belay serving as both an anchor and stepping stone on our journey of ascension. As our relationship with the Estate Pinot Noir evolves, so does our intimacy with this special parcel. In 2017, our ridge top terroir welcomed whole-cluster inclusion of 20%, enhancing structure and providing a spicy counterbalance to the purity of fruit.

Tasting Notes

Our second Pinot Noir vintage from the Estate, the 2017 Belay boasts expressive fruit and a rich ruby core. Bright red fruits feature prominently on both the nose and palate, including pomegranate, raspberry compote, and dried cranberry. The restrained use of new French oak comes through with delicate notes of clove, vanilla, and pie crust, and a savory hint of herbes de Provence further complements the vibrant fruit. A touch of wet stone minerality commingles with refreshing acidity, harmonizing with polished tannins into a lengthy and layered finish.

Wine Reviews

January 2020 | 96 points

“The 2017 Pinot Noir Estate Belay is a real stunner. Explosive, beautifully perfumed and vivid, the 2017 has so much to offer. Sweet red cherry fruit, raspberry, blood orange, mint, spice and cedar all run through this sweeping, dramatic Pinot from Radio-Coteau. The 18% whole clusters add shades of nuance to a Pinot that is simply impeccable from start to finish.”
