2020 Belay Pinot Noir bottle

Vineyard Profile

Planted on a ridge top above the town of Occidental, Belay is our Demeter certified Biodynamic® Estate Pinot Noir. Our goal is to nurture the fruit from grape to glass, which increasingly becomes a reality with each Estate planting. As we become more vertically integrated, we find winegrowing a monumental task akin to climbing a mountain, with the Belay serving as both an anchor and stepping stone on our journey of ascension. By mid-August of 2020, the Estate Pinot Noir was showing physiological maturity with clean berries and spicy, fully lignified stems. This guided our choice to ferment with 50% whole clusters, and the generous stem inclusion ultimately resulted in a stunning and layered standout Pinot Noir from the Estate.

Tasting Notes

A medium ruby color swells to a cranberry tinged rim, unfurling an engaging nose of freshly picked berries, woodsy humus, and lively spice. Hints of red cedar and star anise complement bright cherry and ripe strawberry notes. A vibrantly structured wine with fine grained tannins and refreshing acidity, the 2020 Belay Estate Pinot Noir will surely intrigue for years to come.

Wine Reviews

August 2022 | 93 points

“The 2020 Pinot Noir Estate Belay is terrific. Deep and dark, the 2020 shows quite a bit of intensity for the year. Black cherry, lavender, cloves, leather and incense flesh out in a broad, ample Pinot. The 2020 is quite somber and introspective, but its balance is beyond reproach. It is, quite frankly, an impressive wine for the year.”
