2017 Radio-Coteau Las Colinas bottle

Vineyard Profile

The Las Colinas Syrah is indicative of what is possible for cool-climate Syrah as it captures the essence of the western Sonoma Coast appellation. Élevage in 500-liter French oak puncheons helps to preserve fruit and spice, and affords graceful aging in the cellar. The 2017 vintage featured greater stem lignification across varietals, and Syrah was no exception. By fermenting a greater percentage of whole clusters, the ripe stems of the 2017 Las Colinas produced a heady, savory expression with naturally high acidity.

Tasting Notes

Opening with dried Bing cherry, fresh black plum, and a touch of cassis, the 2017 Las Colinas Syrah is youthful and exciting. The expressive fruit entry gives way to warm inviting notes of star anise, black tea, and cured tobacco leaf. A hint of bacon gaminess wafts throughout an earthy redwood forest undercurrent, accompanied by a whisper of rose potpourri. Lithe and textured, with sturdy tannins, the layered complexity of Las Colinas weaves effortlessly along the palate. Approachable in its youth and will continue to delight and intrigue with age.

Wine Reviews

February 2020 | 94 points

“In 2017, Eric Sussman drew his Las Colinas bottling from two sites: his own biodynamically-farmed Harrison Grade vineyard in Occidental, and Dusty Lane vineyard, an organically farmed site west of Sebastopol. The wine shimmers with energy, right from the first whiff of bay leaf and chorizo, flooding the palate with green and red fruits, lime and evergreen cherry, a mix that feels indigenous to the West Coast while holding to the genetic spiciness of syrah. If you love the cracked green peppercorn scent of cool-climate syrah, that spice is layered into this wine’s intoxicating aroma and lasts, glistening red.”
