2017 Radio-Coteau Board & Batten bottle

Vineyard Profile

Board & Batten pays homage to the various barns originally constructed on the Estate in the 1890s, noted for their distinct exterior siding. In their assembly, each board and accompanying wooden strip–or batten–is an independent unit then joined together to form a strong structure. Our Proprietary Red is crafted in similar fashion, as a stand-alone Estate blend built from individual varietal expressions. Zinfandel provides the structural backbone, Syrah fills out the mid-palate, and Pinot Noir adds a dash of brightness. Our inaugural vintage, the 2017 Board & Batten exhibits a lightness that belies the intensity of its serious parts. The wine’s expressive character was further enhanced over an 18-month élevage in tight-grain, neutral French oak.

Tasting Notes

The charmingly approachable 2017 Board & Batten Estate Proprietary Red opens with a delicate blend of berry fruit, most notably crushed marionberry, ripe raspberry, and fresh black currant. Dried cloves add a touch of warmth, while pennyroyal and black cardamom lend lively complexity. Alluring notes of rosewater and graphite skillfully intermix with gentle tannins, displaying a brightness and versatility to complement a range of palates and cuisines.
